This week is to begin a wrap up of how we are now informed good citizens.
We want to continue our relationships with St. Judes Hospital and to do so we are encouraging our students to write to a given child at St. Judes. This could be anything from a get well card to letter explaining about our process in learning about their organization.
We will have a guest speaker, whom is dressed as Superman to come thank the kids for all they have done. We want them to know that what they did goes appreciated and that they put in a lot of work for this project.
We will have a journal reflection on Friday to write about their experiences- if the child feels so inclined he/she can share with the teacher or a friend about their favorite part of this project, what they feel they have learned, etc.
* Please encourage your child to also discuss these same ideas at home.
On a more personal note- this project was a great experience, i could really feel the kids begin to understand the importance's in the decisions they make. I hope that you can find time to continue some of the ideas we have learned in your home, as we continue to practice them throughout the remainder of the school year.
9. Week #8
CARNIVAL WEEK!!!!
This end of this week we will be hosting, in honor of St. Judes Children Hospital a carnival, so we have lots of prep work!
Using a designated amount of time per day we will be making banners, creating prizes, and really developing a "kids carnival".
The idea behind the podcasts we created last week was an advertisement designed to promote our carnival.
*You can find this radio channel on: 95.7 and we will also be playing each day over the intercom during morning announcements.

8. Week #7
We are beginning this week by your child and their group developing scripts for their podcast audio performance. We want them to learn that this is a process- that before they can record themselves they need to establish what message they are getting across to their audience.
We will be giving each group a paper which gives a clear outline for a beginning, middle, and end. This is due by class Wednesday- we will be giving your child and their group ample time to work on it in class so this should not be a project that requires time from home.
Friday we are creating our podcasts to your child will be given back their script and should be practicing, both in class with their group, and at home for at least ten minutes.

7. Week #6
Your student will be give a sheet that looks similar to the one below- using this we will be talking about the differences between rights and responsibilities. How responsibility often is things that we know we should do- does this feel right? With rights- the privileges we gain from being responsible.
*The sheet is universal between class and home so feel free to use this same sheet in the home

After learning about our responsibility as a part of a community, we are inviting a police officer into our classroom to talk to your child about the importance of following the rules/ laws that are set for us.
We will wrap up the week by developing superhero group names for creating our pod cast- this is a way that your child and their group members will be making an audio file which advertises the charity fundraiser for St. Judes Children Hospital.

6. Week #5
At the beginning of this week we will be having your child share his/her groups information to the class telling what the organization does, who they help, etc. This is very basic knowledge that the student will be sharing.
*Please ask your child to share what they are going to say to our class with you, siblings, friends, etc.
After group presentations we will take a class vote to decide upon the organization we want to raise money for.
As the week goes on we want to be developing some of our earlier ideas about what makes a good citizen: discussion rights versus responsibilities, the importance in following rules/ laws, and we will be taking a field trip to the Ridgewood's local park to clean up the grounds.
Your Child will be provided with all materials necessary to make this a clean, safe, and fun activity.
*If you or your family members are interested in being a chaperon on this outting please contact me at kteacher@ridgwoodelementary.edu.

5. Week #4
We want the students to develop the ability to work well in a group:
using this idea students will do further research (with adult aid) on an age appropriate charity research project.
We want the students to gain a prior understanding of a few specific charities that they can share with their peers before voting on the charity that they want to raise money for.
Your child (in class) has developed a poster that represents some of the basic ideas behind their fund raiser.
Here is a sample of one of the groups posters:

*Fell free to talk to your child to share what charity their group has gotten for this assignment and what they have learned.

4. Week #3
The introduction of our class charity project will start with readings of superman--- "Superman needs your help!" We want your child and his/ her peers to understand that helping someone/ something out is not just a job for the "superheros."
Our final project for this lesson plan will be a charity fundraiser- I feel it is important for the students to feel they are in charge of their own learning and can contribute to what in fact they are learning so we are going to have them break off in small groups and form ideas about what they can do to raise money and what kind of charities they want to raise money for.
*Democracy rules! We will be teaching the students about voting process in the classroom- because students this week will be forming ideas for what charities they will be raising money for next week we, as a class, will have to pick one charity and one way of which we will be raising the money- walk-a-thon, can food drive, carnival, etc.
